Suicide, as horrific as it sounds, we have lost many lives to it. Every time any person commits it we fail as humans. We fail as we did not provide help to someone who needed it. Mostly, the cause of suicide is depression and maybe if we can just be more vigilant to its symptoms and remedies we can save lives.
Recently, when the news of Chester Bennington committing suicide broke the net, we exclaimed that we didn’t see this coming!
Though, the symptoms were always there. We were shocked, disheartened and it took a life of a celebrity to address the importance of mental health.
Though, this isn’t the first time that someone has committed suicide which is the most discouraging part; many people (celebrities or otherwise) take the decision to end their life, trying to end their suffering. Take a look at the many lives which ended in this dark battle.
Army non-commissioned officer and American film actor, Mantenuto shot himself to death in April 2017. He was brave in fighting the enemies during his service in the Army and was awarded various medals like Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medals, Army Achievement Medals and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
He did not pursue his acting career and had moved on to be an Army officer.
In May, 2017 we lost another gem of an American Musician, singer and songwriter. Cornell was the lead vocalist for the rock bands Soundgarden and Audioslave. He had a successful career and also received various awards. But, he suffered from depression and substance abuse and also joined rehab to get out of it. Succeeding most of the times, he lost his battle against depression, after his last performance at the Fox Theatre.
In April, 2016 this 25-year-old Indian actress, Pratyusha Banerjee committed suicide due to troubles in her personal life. She acted in television shows like Balika Vadhu and was also a participant of the show Bigg Boss 7. The cause of her death according to the post-mortem reports was asphyxia.
Known online by her username ITZ Dolly, she was only 12 years of age when she ended her life. The most horrific fact was that she live streamed her suicide on Live.me. She recorded dozens of videos giving an insight into her life. Despite helping others to overcome problems with depression, she lost her life to it.
Keith Noel Emerson shot himself to death in March 2016. His love for music made him a famous English musician and composer. He played keyboards in various bands and was internationally famous for his work with the Nice. He also lost his life to depression and anxiety due to nerve damage.
She was a Belgian Film director, artist and professor of films. With movies like Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce and many critically acclaimed films to her credit, Akerman ended her life in October 2015 because of Depression. She was only 65 when she ended her life, 10 days after returning from the hospital in Paris, where she was being treated for depression.
Chilean Footballer- Eduardo Guillermo Bonvallet Godoy, reportedly fought Cancer but, lost his life to depression in September 2015. He represented his country in one of the FIFA world cup qualification match and also played three games in the 1982 FIFA world cup.
Christopher James Hardman aka Lil’ Chris, hanged himself to death in March 2015 at the age of 24. He was famous for his work as an English singer, songwriter, actor and television personality. In 2008, he hosted his series Everybody Loves Lil’ Chris and despite being a go-getter he lost his life to depression. He tweeted on various occasions about depression but alas, couldn’t find help on time.
Depression as bad as it is has taken many lives and it’s threatening to know how people fail to talk about it. If you can imagine the abyss till where one reaches to end one’s own life you will be shocked to know how badly a person may be suffering and what their mental state will be that makes them take such a drastic step. Death is inevitable but, a timely death is better than ending your own life.
Life is tough, we understand and, if you are suffering from any type of mental illness: read books, talk to friends, family members, consult therapists, seek help and get one. Just do anything, try everything that can help you live and try not to end your life. Let 2017, be a year where we save lives and fight depression because we are stronger than we know.
